Reviews
of Ubisoft and Tom Clancy's newest license to print money have finally begun to appear in some quantity and the
consensus is... impressive.
- Team Xbox (93%) -
"Ubisoft is not only kicking the door in with Advanced Warfighter, they are taking the whole damn
building down along with it! Despite a few questionable decisions, such as the lack of any Southpaw support, or the
ability to lean in multiplayer, the game is everything we've come to expect since it was first shown a year
ago."
- Gamespot
(92%) - "If you like shooters or action games, and you own an Xbox 360, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is
a must-own for your library. A solid and challenging campaign and a unique, online-co-op mode combine with an unmatched
presentation in what is arguably the best game yet on the Xbox 360."
- IGN (92%) - "GRAW is fundamentally the same
methodically paced, squad-based sniper game of yesteryear, but the formula has been enhanced, polished, and realized in
ways it's never been capable of reaching in prior generations. Of course, the online portion is vast, impressive, and
deep in replay value, and it may very well be the reason to finally get on and stay on Xbox Live for the first time in
this console's short history."
As if you needed any more reason to get this game! The reviews are
universally glowing:
Gamerankings has a cumulative
rating of 91% thus far, while
Metacritic has 92%. The major gripe
appears to be the lack of options in controller-layouts, a long standing pet peeve of gamers--especially
lefties--everywhere! Come on game devs, this is like having a save-everywhere function on handheld titles--it's not an
option, it's mandatory!

It's a shame - it's only getting such high marks due to graphics and the sheer wait involved in getting a new game for the 360.
I haven't played online, so perhaps it's different than the single-player.. but coming from the old-school, I still believe offline play should come first.
- AI Pathfinding bugs
- the ever-present "hey let me stand in your way the split-second you shoot" hari-kari of your squad
- Unrealistically slow movement when ducking in and out of cover (I certainly wouldn't take my sweet-ass time ducking back behind a car to reload, why must my character?)
- environment lighting problems
- randomly being removed from cover
- impossible shots (you can keep cover in a place with no possible angles of attack, and then somehow you just randomly fall over)
It has such incredible potential, too. Aside from the slightly confusing/laggy controls and HUD elements, it does have an awesome game behind those glaring issues.
I'll try the multiplayer element this evening, hopefully it will be a better experience.

Thanks, I just wrote in the last post where was your review of GRAW and 2 seconds later you show the ratings and say to buy it. Now I feel
stupid-er..... But anyway, what have you guys been playing on GRAW? Co-op? Team Elimination? Offline campaign? If you're playing online I'll stop by tonight and be a real nuissance.

Should I buy it if I hate war sims but love halo? Also, I hated the earlier ghost recons. They always had terrible gameplay. Should I buy this one simply based on graphics?

TeamXbox's review is wrong, stating that you cannot lean in multiplayer, because you definitly can. Hold down LB and then press left or right on the analog stick, and BOOM! you'll be leaning
amazing game by the way.

I wouldn't buy anything based on graphics alone. I might *rent* something based on graphics alone. :)

I haven't experienced any of what he has just said. He might have a problematic game or Xbox 360.

First off, this game is not for Halo fans who are only into the Run 'N' Gun. However, there is plenty of action in this game and the controlling your squad and using the HUD is rather simple. For me, this games blends the perfect amount of action and squad strategy.

Yep. Controller options suck. No southpaw, no legacy thumbstick setting. I hate it when games don't include these options. I have to relearn how to freakin walk in a game. Then when I go back to Halo 2, I have to adjust again. Are universal control options too difficult to implement?! I would think this is just common sense... *Goes back to playing GRAW with limited success*

For those of us with a JPN or PAL 360 I'd also like to point out for those who don't know, G.R.A.W is regional-free as well.

Beats me Spartacus. I'd think it would be relatively simple, but I could be mistaken.
I'm picky about my controls though. I hate not being able to change it.

Does anyone else with HD widescreen notice that they're not seeing the entire blue outline of the "goggle view" that's supposed to surround the screen?
See this pic:
http://screenshots.teamxbox.com/screen/47118/Tom-Clancys-Ghost-Recon-Advanced-Warfighter/
I can't see that blue outline at all on the sides, and only a small amount of it on the top and bottom. Didn't notice any settings to change it... (Running 720p on a Samsung DLP.)

Apparently, Ubisoft's answer is, "you're not missing anything, so don't sweat it". Doesn't look like they intend on fixing it, so I guess we have no choice.

Re: not seeing the entire screen in HD- Most screens do not show end-to-end. Go into your favorite HD-TV retailer and look at all of the screens on the same signal, you'll need something with HD content at the very edges of the screen. Take for instance ESPN HD with a SD program surrounded by the letters "HD" vertically alligned.
Notice how some of the displays TRUNCATE the Left, the Right, or Both sides. Notice how some displays show more of the picture. I bet you didn't look at that when you bought your display, did ya'?
I picked up a Panasonic 50" plasma TH-50PX50U, 720p. It displayed more of the image than any of the others save the Aquos line of

I have a similar problem with games on my Dell LCD HDTV. If the 360 is set to less that 1080i, things get pushed off the left side of the screen. Even on 1080i I have to change the horizontal settings and "push" the screen to the right, and it's still not exactly on center. This really sucks because my TV doesn't save the horizontal settings, so I have to change it again everytime I play.
It's really weird because DVD's seem to be perfectly on center without any necessary adjustments.

I got this game yesterday and played it for about 3 hours last night. I havent played online at all, but I played single player and its great. As far as #1's problems. The only 2 Ive had is that my squad mates are a little hard to control and have a few AI issues, but nothing that upsets me too much so far. As far as the impossible shots when you are behind cover, this may not be a glitch. From what Ive read and experienced, some objects that you get cover behind can be shot trough. For instance, you can shoot through a car or a wooden fence. This is because Bullets can pierce cars and fences. Also, some of the higher power sniper rifles can shoot through some objects. For instance, when you are trying to get to (spoilers) where the mexican presidents convoy was attacked, there is a large plaza and along one side there are pillars. I was hiding behind one of those pillars and the bad guys culd snipe through it. I dont know if this is forensicly accurte or not, but I think it is pretty neat and adds to the game. This is nice as opposed to a lot of games where I can hide behind a wooden crate and the crate stops all the bullets shot at me.

No southpaw? And they call this a next-gen game? I mean I have been looking forward to this game for like a year now and they ruin it by not including southpaw? I learned first-person console shooting on the N64 Goldeneye conrols which were the most similar to SOUTHPAW. Lets hope they update this title soon and open this game up to 1/4 of the gamers out there.

Why doesn't Microsoft just make a lefty controller? I believe people are 80% righty and 20% lefty. Isn't that a large enough market to address this major problem.
This way developers don't have to worry about it and lefties can finally buy any game they want without worry of Southpaw.

Goldeneye on N64 wasn't southpaw, it was the equivalent to legacy. The thumbstick did your move and turn functions, while the directional C buttons worked as our look up and down and strafe functions. This is what Halo 2's legacy setting does, except that of course instead of the C buttons, you have another thumbstick. This is the only layout I roll with, unless some crappy developers don't include it in their game... I actually boycotted the Mech Assault series on Xbox because of the bass ackwards controls and lack of options. Legacy inverted for the win!
