MetaReview - Full Auto

Last week saw the release of Full Auto, one of the only Xbox 360 games to get released post-launch. We even got our hands on a free XBLM demo last month. So, did the full version expand on the demo's action-packed, albeit repetitive, gameplay? Let's check in with the reviews, including Joystiq's own:
  •  Joystiq (55%) - "In many regards, Full Auto feels like this, a big clump of dough that never made it to the oven. The ingredients are there, but the final product is raw and never rises to the level achieved by great racing titles."
  • 1UP (80%) - "At first glance, it may appear to be a considerably slower Burnout clone, but upon further inspection, the game is an entirely different beast, breathing new life to a genre that is growing ever stagnant."
  • Gamespot (65%) - "Overall, Full Auto doesn't have enough variety to remain entertaining for very long. You might want to rent it and mess around with it for a few days, but the career mode gets repetitive well before it ends and the online doesn't bring much to the overall package."
The bad news is that the consensus seems to be that Full Auto is a one trick pony. The good news is you ought to know if that one trick is enough to get your wallet out. Check out the demo, play it a handful of times.

1. I have seen a lot of negative reviews of this game, and it does have its flaws, Some times the frame rate drops when there is a lot going on, and it can get repetative, but I have to admit that I love this game for the sole reason that it is just pure fun. Power sliding around corners while blowing $#!^ up really gets the adrenaline pumping and makes this game worth it. The graphics, sound effects and matrix like camera shots when you kill someone makes this game cool, Plus it is easy to pick up, so anyone that comes over can race a couple times in arcade to get the hang of it, and then we can play each other split screen. I pre-ordered this game after playing the demo on xbl and would suggest it to anyone who just likes a fun video game.

2. I've had it on rental for six days now, and played it every one of those days. At first I thought I'd get tired of it quickly, like I do with most race games, including Burnout, but it keeps sucking me back in with new things to explode while hauling ass through a crumbling city. The framerate problems are real, but I've only seen them when you get six or seven cars on screen simultaneously, while other things are exploding. The in game cinematic sequences are cool. I demoed the game to a group of friends, and after they picked their jaws off the floor, seized the controller and wouldn't give it back. At the very least it's a rental.

3. How do you two think the full version plays compared to the demo? Is it much more of the same, or is there a lot more going on?

4. There are a lot more game modes, tracks, and cars (that need to be unlocked via career mode) but the basics are the same, drive fast, blow $#!^ up.

5. One of the things I hated about the demo was the fact that the cars just were not attached to the road... meaning they had no real world weight on them. All they did was drive and shoot. Crazy Taxi had better car physics than the demo of Full Auto. I like a good arcade racer but c'mon... what I saw in the demo was pathetic. Blowing stuff up for the sake of blowing it up just gets old after about 5 minutes.

6. I think that the highlight of this game is that the vehicles are usually easy to drive. Sliding corners and hitting jumps are much easier than other racers.

The physics are somewhat "floaty", but that's fine with me. It makes for some insane launches, wrecks, and damage.

I'm taking a break from the game right now. Online seems to be the best way to take this game.

7. I've been playing Need For Speed since launch and gave the demo a try...This game does not even compare...it feels like your going too slow compared to NFS and the graphics and sound are severely lacking. The cars look like their floating...they don't seem to actually interact with the ground in a real way...which sounds like poor physics to me.

This game is definatley not worth it. Stick with NFS or the upcoming Burnout title.
